Tasmania was originally named as “Anthony Van Diemen's land” By Abel Tasman who made the first reported sighting of the island on the 24th of November 1642, the island was named after his sponsor “Anthony Van Diemen”, the Governor of the Dutch East Indies. This name was eventually shortened by the British to Van Diemens Land. Then in honor of the Dutch explorer the British Finally renamed the island Tasmania on the 1st of the January 1865.

Believe it or not Tasmania was once connected to the mainland of Australia, luckily the local people of Tasmania sunk that land bridge many of thousands of years ago, or so they will tell you.

Tasmania was first inhabited by Tasmanian Aboriginals. Evidence indicates their presence in the region, later to become an island, at least 35,000 years ago. Rising sea levels cut Tasmania off from mainland Australia about 10,000 years ago.

Tasmania was a colony of the British Empire from 1856 until 1901, when it became a federation with 5 other Australian colonies to form the commonwealth of Australia.
